Boeing Faces Scrutiny Over Whistleblower's Death

Family of former Boeing quality manager files wrongful death lawsuit, alleging harassment led to suicide.
John Barnett, a former quality control manager at Boeing, took his own life in March 2024 following his disclosure of safety concerns regarding the 787 Dreamliner manufacturing process. Barnett had flagged problems including metal debris located near critical flight control wiring and deficiencies in oxygen system components.
Barnett's relatives have initiated a wrongful death legal action against Boeing, claiming the corporation subjected him to harassment and intimidation that resulted in serious depression and anxiety disorders. Court filings indicate Barnett experienced a hostile workplace atmosphere after publicly disclosing his safety concerns, with internal company records suggesting he was sidelined from operational responsibilities.
Boeing has offered sympathies to the family but has declined to address lawsuit details, referencing active legal proceedings. Industry oversight organizations and worker advocacy groups have demanded independent inquiries, while multiple legislators have signaled intentions to question the FAA and OSHA regarding protections afforded to whistleblowers within the aviation industry.
