What DLR is

DLR is the German Aerospace Center aptitude battery. Lufthansa Group’s European Flight Academy asks applicants for a current DLR certificate before training starts.

The sitting covers attention, memory, orientation, and psycho-motorics. The invitation names the tests. Practice for those tasks is in Pilot Preparation, in the same subscription as Aon, ADAPT, and COMPASS. Further DLR tasks are still being added there.

Skill areas

18 timed tasks.

  1. 01

    Bourdon Test (ABQ)

Cross out every a, b, and q in a field of letters.

  2. 02

    Perceptual Speed (OWT)

Nine dials flash for a few seconds. Read the four critical instruments and enter their values in order.

  3. 03

    Radar Vigilance Test (RVT)

Watch the sweep and press only when it reaches a square.

  4. 04

    Shape Recognition Test (VFF)

Find the outline hidden in a line figure and choose it before the clock runs out.

  5. 05

    Signals Processing Test (SVT)

A colour lights on the cue pad. Press the answer key that matches the rule for that colour.

  6. 06

    Triangle Test (SKT)

Memorise three keys, then compare each triangle with the one before. Top is colour, right is direction, bottom is the number of marks.

  7. 07

    Acoustical Memory Test (AKM)

Hear each row of tones, then check the boxes that sounded.

  8. 08

    Letter Memory Test (BGT)

A row of letters flashes up. Type the letters back in the same order.

  9. 09

    Running Memory Span Test (RMS)

Hear a short run of numbers, then type them back in reverse before the pie runs out.

  10. 10

    Visual Memory Capacity (VMC)

Say whether this symbol matches the one from a few steps back. Shape, colour, and drawing all have to agree.

  11. 11

    Visual Memory Test (VIM/MEK)

Memorise four items and their numbers. One item comes back. Enter the number that went with it.

  12. 12

    Cube Folding Test (PPT)

Study an unfolded cube net and decide which 3D cube can be folded from it.

  13. 13

    Route Turns

Count the left or right turns on a route. It starts at a ring and ends at an arrow.

  14. 14

    Cube Rotation Test (ROT)

Hear where the cross starts and how the cube tips. Choose the face it finishes on.

  15. 15

    Rotating Maze (RMZ)

Steer the ball to the mark. The maze turns clockwise, so the way ahead keeps changing.

  16. 16

Psycho-motorics: Monitoring and Instrument Coordination (MIC)

Hold speed, heading, and altitude on the green marks. Press when three odd or three even numbers are called.

  17. 17

    Maths

Speed, fuel, Pythagoras, headings and trigonometry. The numbers change every run.

  18. 18

    Physics

Short calculations on force, motion, pressure, circuits, gases and levers. The numbers change every run.
