What COMPASS is

COMPASS is the pilot aptitude battery from EPST, used when airlines screen cadets and pilots. Etihad runs it at the assessment centre in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Flight Training Academy uses it for the Dubai assessment, and both Transavia and SpiceJet’s cadet academy sit Compass tests with EPST.

Applicants for Smartwings, Virgin Australia, Air Astana, Copa, and Akasa prepare for that same battery. The practice on this page is the full set of COMPASS tasks.

Skill areas

10 timed tasks.

  1. 01

    Bearings

Read the heading, the horizon, and the beacon needle, then choose the aircraft around the beacon that matches all three.

  2. 02

    Slalom

Steer a jet through a long run of gates. Easy travels up the screen. Later levels roll the camera one way, then the other way, then back. The first direction is random.

  3. 03

    Control

Keep an orange ball on the centre mark of two instruments while each ball is pushed off at random.

  4. 04

    FMS

Listen to altitude, heading, speed, and a radio frequency, then enter each value in the matching box before the next call.

  5. 05

    Task Manager

Copy altitude, heading, and speed from the scratchpad into the autopilot, and put out each light by pressing its key.

  6. 06

    Variable Memory

Memorize variable values, then answer questions that use those values.

  7. 07

    Short-term Memory

Memorize sequences or aircraft information, then recall the requested detail under time pressure.

  8. 08

    Spatial Orientation (scales ndb)

Read the gyro for the flying direction and the RBI for the zone around the ground station. Place the matching letter in that zone. Each question is one round.

  9. 09

    Maths

Speed, fuel, Pythagoras, headings and trigonometry. The numbers change every run.

  10. 10

    Physics

Short calculations on force, motion, pressure, circuits, gases and levers. The numbers change every run.

FAQ

Is this the official COMPASS test?

No. This is independent practice. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to COMPASS or any airline. The tasks are original and are not copies of live selection items.

Which airlines use COMPASS?

Etihad runs COMPASS at the Abu Dhabi assessment centre. Emirates Flight Training Academy uses it on the Dubai assessment. Transavia’s careers page names Compass tests, online or at EPST in Utrecht. SpiceJet’s cadet page at Spice Star Academy names COMPASS as phase 1. Applicants for Smartwings, Virgin Australia, Air Astana, Copa, and Akasa prepare for the same battery. A hiring campaign can change the test. Confirm the current one on the pilot preparation page.

What is the COMPASS pilot test?

COMPASS is a pilot aptitude battery from EPST. Airlines use it when they screen cadets and pilots.

Is the COMPASS test online?

Some sittings are online and some are at a centre. Emirates Flight Training Academy calls Compass an online aptitude test on the Dubai assessment. Transavia’s careers page says Compass tests are taken online or at EPST in Utrecht. Etihad runs COMPASS at the assessment centre in Abu Dhabi.

What does the COMPASS test cover?

Emirates Flight Training Academy lists hand-eye coordination, hand-eye-foot coordination, spatial orientation, multitasking, and short-term memory. SpiceJet’s cadet page at Spice Star Academy lists memory, mathematics, spatial orientation, and task manager, then a joystick and rudder-pedal control task. The named modules differ by programme.

Which tasks can I practise here?

Bearings, Slalom, Control, FMS, Task Manager, Variable Memory, Short-term Memory, Spatial Orientation, Maths, and Physics. Each task is timed, and you see your score afterwards.

What does the subscription include?

Pilot Preparation covers every pilot preparation, not only COMPASS. The tasks on this page are the COMPASS battery inside that subscription. A battery added later stays in the same subscription.
