Objective
Memorize a set of unique colored pictograms, stay accurate through a batch of simple mental arithmetic problems, then for each color identify the correct shape from a grid of same-color pictograms.
How It Works
This module mirrors the FEAST Memorize Pictograms principle: you encode several uniquely colored shapes, hold them in short-term memory while calculation tasks interrupt you, then discriminate each memorized form from similar shapes rendered in a single color. The alternating memory and arithmetic phases test selective visual perception, working memory, and mental flexibility under time pressure.
Step-by-step Instructions
- In the memorize phase, study all pictograms shown together — each has a different color
- Remember the shape, inner mark, and orientation of each colored pictogram
- In the math phase, decide for each equation whether the shown result is correct or incorrect
- Press Correct or Incorrect for every arithmetic problem in the batch
- In the recall phase, a grid of same-color pictograms appears (e.g. all red); click the shape you memorized for that color
- Repeat recall for each color until all memorized pictograms have been tested
- Respond within the time limit in each phase to score points
Skills You Develop
- Selective visual perception
- Short-term visual memory
- Mental arithmetic under interruption
- Attention switching
- Pattern discrimination
- Concentration under time pressure
Coaching Tips
- Link each shape to its color while memorizing — you will need the shape when all options are one color
- Focus on distinctive inner marks and outer shapes, not just color
- Answer math problems quickly so you can return focus to stored shapes
- During recall, compare shapes carefully since color no longer distinguishes the correct answer
- Watch for small differences in rotation and inner marks between same-color alternatives
