NATS: Grid Deduction

Back to NATS Preparation Suite

Introduction

Grid Deduction is a Stage 1 module in the NATS Preparation Suite. Each grid uses every symbol once in each row and once in each column. You choose the symbol for one marked cell.

The task

Read the row and the column that cross at the marked cell. The symbol you need is the one that is missing from both. Other cells may be empty. They are there so you can deduce the marked cell, and only that cell is scored. Press the symbol, or use the number keys in the order the symbols are shown.

Each grid is one round with its own time limit. A wrong symbol and a grid that times out both miss the round. A level may pause after the answer, or go straight to the next grid.

The marked cell is the symbol missing from that row and from that column. The other empty cells are not scored.

Priorities

Start with the row or column that is almost full. Cross off the symbols already used, and only then look at the other line. Filling the whole grid is unnecessary when one crossing already names the marked cell. When more cells are blank, use a second row to rule out a symbol the first row still allows.

The in-module walkthrough completes one row and shows the symbol that has to sit in the marked cell. Inductive Reasoning, Spatial Orientation, and Motion Challenge are other Stage 1 modules in the suite. A broader overview is available in NATS Test Explained.
