FEAST 1: Divided Attention

Back to FEAST Preparation Suite

Introduction

Divided Attention is a monitoring module in the FEAST Preparation Suite. Several numbered playgrounds run at the same time. Each one holds a red ball and a green rocket. You mark a playground only in the moment they touch.

The task

Divided Attention board with numbered playgrounds, each holding a red ball and a green rocket
Each playground is numbered. A hit is the ball touching the rocket. Passing close leaves that number alone.

The ball is a red circle. The rocket is a green bar. Both move inside their own playground and bounce off its edges. The rocket also turns, so the direction of the bar keeps changing.

A collision is the moment the ball touches the rocket. Press that playground’s number, or click the matching Playground button. If they only pass near each other, leave that playground alone. Pressing when there is no contact is a false alarm. Letting the answer window expire after a real contact is a miss. Both are scored as wrong.

Collisions in one playground stack. If the ball touches the rocket three times in a row before you have caught up, you answer three times, once for each contact. The same number, pressed again, clears the next one in the stack.

The session is one continuous run, with a countdown until it ends. Difficulty runs from EASY, through Medium and Hard, to TEST. The task stays the same throughout: watch every playground, and answer only when the ball touches the rocket.

Priorities

Keep a fixed loop across every playground, then answer as soon as the ball and rocket touch and return to the loop. The pair that looks closest is easy to watch while a real contact happens somewhere else. A near miss still leaves the button alone.

The in-module walkthrough shows the ball, the rocket, a real contact, a near miss, and the number keys before the timed session begins. Detect Conflicts, Stay Alert, and Scan and Compare Figures are other FEAST I modules in the suite. A broader overview is available in FEAST Modules Explained.
